Eighth AFRICAGIS Conference and Exhibition

Post-Conference Workshop Dates: September 22nd - 27th, 2007    (ESRI Workshop)

Venue: Ouaga 2000 Convention Center

AFRICAGIS 2007 is organized by the Ministry of Secondary, Higher Education and Scientific Research in partnership with EIS-AFRICA, the Network for a co-operative management of environmental information in Africa, African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE), and African Organization of Cartography and Remote Sensing (OACT). In addition, the following intitutions/organizations from Burkina Faso and other African countries contributed significantly to the organization of the conference:

  • Universities of Ouagadougou and Dioulasso
  • The Geographical Institute of Burkina (IGB)
  • The International Institute of the Engineering of Water and the Environment (ex Groupe EIER-ETSHER), the National office of Burkinabè Tourism
  • The SIGET-Adjaratou Center
  • The CERPINEDD
  • The AFSCI-B
  • Liptako Gourma's Authority
  • The UEMOA

AFRICAGIS conference is held every other year and usually draws 500 - 1000 participants from different parts of the world. It is a forum for African and International Geo Information professionals to network, share their knowledge, experience, and research in the fields in which geospatial technologies are applied. Typical conference participants are decision makers, researchers, educators, students, practitioners, services providers, data sellers, and technology vendors (software and hardware).

Seven past conferences were held in major african cities listed below:

  • 1993: Tunis, Tunisia
  • 1995: Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire
  • 1997: Gaborone, Botswana
  • 1999: Accra, Ghana
  • 2001: Nairobi, Kenya
  • 2003: Dakar, Sénégal
  • 2005: Tshwane (ex-Prétoria), Afrique du Sud

Since Gaborone in 1997, three African organizations committed and continued to provide leadership in the organization of AfricaGIS. These organizations are:

  • EIS-Africa, Environmental Information System in Africa
  • AARSE, African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment
  • OACT, African Organization of the Cartography and Remote Sensing
